Vintages Italian Specials – Half Price Red, Intriguing White

Every two weeks the LCBO releases dozens of limited supply wines through the Vintages section which are not practical for widespread distribution, here are two more from Saturday, October 31.

Don’t avoid the Vintages section because you think that all they have are expensive wines, while he average cost per bottle of the 116 in this release was $82 (and some sell upwards of $250), we have managed to find more than 40 selling for less than $20.

In this release we highlight two affordable wines we think you will enjoy.

Vigneti Del Salento I Muri Primitivo 2018 (Italy; Puglia - $13.95)

The world’s biggest wine site, Vivino, estimates that red wines with this rating (3.8) sell for an average of $26 a bottle, this Primitivo (aka Zinfandel) also features as one of their Best Under $20.

Medium/full bodied and off dry, expect rich blackberry, ripe plum and dark fruit tastes with oak and vanilla notes.

Fruity, well balanced and smooth, this is a straightforward easy drinking wine.

Watch for other wines by the producer, Farnese, they deliver great value Italian wines.

ABV 12.0%, 11 g/L residual sugar.

Velenosi Querciantica Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi 2019 (Italy: Marche - $16.95)

The Verdicchio grape dates to the 14th century in the Marche region and is well known for its greenish yellow hue.

The wine has green apple and pear tastes which are backed by classic lemon and citrus flavours with bracing acidity.

Very fresh and smooth, it certainly can be sipped, it is best with seafood dishes.

Another interesting pairing is with pasta in basil pesto sauce (the Costco Kirkland brand is excellent and great to have on hand).

ABV 13.5%, 5 g/L residual sugar.

Reminder, these wines can be in short supply so not every outlet will have them in stock but you can order them through your local store at no additional cost.
