The Top 6 Wines on Sale at the LCBO Right Now

Every four weeks more than 100 wines are on sale in Ontario at discounts up to 20% off the regular price. The current offering expires on October 11, 2020.

Here are our top six picks, all are highly rated and recommended by What Wines When.

Quinta De Bons Ventos Lisboa VR ($8.75, reduced from $10.75)

Portugal: Alenquer

Amazing value, the Quinta sells at half the price of comparably rated wines in this sale.

A blend of four local grapes, there are lots of rich dark fruit tastes like blackberries and blueberries backed by red fruits with the oak from four months aging making itself felt.

Smooth tannins and gentle acidity make for easy drinking, the wine really benefits from an hour’s breathing.

Serve with Feijoada – Portuguese bean stew with beef and pork.

ABV 13.0%, 10 g/L residual sugar.

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Rum Barrels Merlot ($16.95, reduced from $19.95)

United States: California

Enormously popular with our southern neighbours, this different take on Merlot is quickly catching on here.

Aging in rum barrels adds coconut, baking spice and vanilla to the plum and blackberry tastes so characteristic of Merlot. The flavours are bold but not jam-like. The fruit has it tasting slightly sweet but it is actually quite dry (only 6 g/L sugar). The tannins and acidity are nicely balanced, making it a real crowd pleaser.

Best served with grilled beef dishes.

ABV 14.5%.

Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc ($17.95, reduced from $19.95)

New Zealand: Marlborough

One of the very best New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs at this price.

Refreshing, crisp and flavourful, grapefruit and citrus dominate the palate against a background of tropical and tree fruit tastes.

Dry and elegant with bracing acidity, it is a great aperitif wine or serve with grilled white fish.

ABV 13.0%, 5 g/L residual sugar.

Freixenet Carta Nevada Brut Cava ($11.95, reduced from $13.45)

Spain

An old favourite in its familiar gold bottle, stock up at this price for the remaining warm patio days or for Fall mimosas.

Opens with fresh apple and citrus notes with persistent lively bubbles.

Acidity is gentle and assures smooth drinking on its own or served with appetizers.

ABV 11.5%, 9 g/L residual sugar.

Seven Falls Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.95, reduced from $21.95)

United States: Washington

From highly regarded Chateau Ste Michelle, this is new to Vintages so get there soon in

case they run out.

Full body with a classic Cabernet Sauvignon profile of oak and vanilla, blackberries, plums and black cherries with red fruit in the background.

Dry with a medium finish, drink it by itself or with grilled meats, very good value.

ABV 14.5%, residual sugar 5 g/L.

Open Smooth White VQA ($11.95, reduced from $12.95)

Canada: Niagara

A light, smooth and uncomplicated off-dry wine at an attractive price, which will appeal to

those not favouring bone dry white wines.

Peaches, yellow apples and apricots, citrus and lemon on the palate and a medium finish.

It pairs well with lightly spiced Asian dishes but it is also a good sipper.

ABV 12.0%, 20 g/L residual sugar.
