Nine Best Inexpensive Bubblies For New Years Eve!

We want to celebrate the end of 2020 as much as welcoming the New Year 2021 but we are not really sure that Champagne feels appropriate this year so, while we really don’t have a wide selection of sparkling wines to choose from here in Ontario, here are some great choices at excellent prices.

But, at these prices you don’t need to wait until New Years to brighten up your day with a glass of the sparkling stuff, here are nine which we are happy to recommend – Cremants and a Rose from France, Cavas from Spain, Proseccos from Italy, and a bargain basement low alcohol sweet bubbly.

And, three of them are on sale right now.

But, we are really fortunate to be living in Canada so let’s kick it off with the Lily Sparkling Rose from our Niagara region.

Lily Sparkling Rose VQA (Canada: Ontario - $16.95 on sale, save $1.00)

A sweeter style with fresh berries, red fruit and grapefruit tastes joined by newly baked bread notes on the finish.

The fine bubbles contribute to a creamy texture and the winemaker suggests erving with savoury crepes, salads or freshly picked berries.

ABV 12.0%, sugar 23 g/L.

Louis Bouillot Perle d’Aurore Brut Rose Cremant de Bourgogne (France: Burgundy - $22.95)

Slightly out of our usual price range but this special occasion wine is well worth it with its flavours of wild strawberries, raspberries and red cherries.

The wine is crisp and well balanced with persistent bubbles leading to a smooth satisfying finish.

ABV 12.0%, residual sugar 11 g/L.

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Cava (Spain - $16.05)

Seemingly timeless and a favourite of our followers, expect an array of tastes ranging from peaches, pears and apples to lemon, grapefruit, and toast.

Great balance in a medium body with a refreshing finish.

ABV 12.0%, 12 g/L residual sugar.

Freixenet Carta Nevada Brut Cava (Spain - $13.45)

That familiar gold bottle offers terrific value with aromas of apples and pears which are joined on the palate with tastes of citrus and toast.

Medium bodied with fizzy bubbles, serve as an aperitif or with a cured meat and cheese platter.

ABV 11.5%, 10 g/L residual sugar.

Fiol Prosecco (Italy: Veneto - $16.25)

Our followers favourite Prosecco at this price point, the bouquet is floral and followed by flavours of green apples, pears, citrus and brioche.

Small and persistent bubbles give a creamy mouthfeel, a highly versatile wine to sip or serve with lighter fare.

ABV 11.0%, 16 g/L residual sugar.

Blu Giovello Prosecco (Italy: Veneto - $14.60 on sale, save $1.50)

Look for the bright blue bottle, you will encounter aromas and tastes of pineapple, yellow pears and lemon zest in a light to medium bodied wine with soft bubbles.

Light and refreshing, a hint of sweetness prevents it from being too acidic, a real crowd pleaser.

ABV 11.0%, 17 g/L residual sugar.

Louis Bouillot Perle Noire Blanc de Noirs Brut (France: Burgundy - $14.95 on sale, save $2.00)

Champagne style from Burgundy at a great price, you will be hard pressed to tell the difference from the real thing.

Crisp tastes of apple, pear and citrus in a dry medium body with fine bubbles and toast notes leads to a long smooth finish.

ABV 11.5%, residual sugar 13 g/L.

Pierre Sparr Reserve Cremant d’Alsace Brut Reserve (France: Alsace - $18.95)

Aromas of toast and pink grapefruit are followed by flavours of pears, apples and citrus with assertive bubbles in a medium body.

A touch sweet and acidic, this drinks well by itself or paired with spicy Asian food.

ABV 12.5%, 11 g/L residual sugar.

Chiarli Castelvetro Lambrusco (Italy - $10.95)

Whether you have a sweet tooth or just prefer a lower alcohol beverage, check out this wine from the 160 year old Chiarli family in Modena (home of famous names such as Ferrari and Pavarotti).

Deep purple in colour with black plum, blood orange and spice aromas and flavours, a good sipper, it also goes well with rich pasta dishes or strong cheeses.

ABV 8.0%, residual sugar 49 g/L.
